In the Wilderness 'RAJA GIRI CAVE in Mihinthle```
At the end of a narrow gravel path opposite the Kaludiya Pokuna, off the Jaffna- Mihinthale main road, stands a hillock named "Raja Giri Cave".πͺ¨π
The Rajagiri cave appeared tall and solitary above the giant treetops.π³π The first sight that caught our eyes was the ruins of an image house and a dagoba.π This cave monastery is now declared as an archaeological reserve by the Archaeological Department.ππ
The Rajagiri Lena Kanda is made up of a complex of caves.⛰️ According to the Mahavamsa, during the reign of King Saddhatissa, these caves had been inhabited by Kala Buddha Rakhita Thero.ππ»πΈThe members of Royal family had frequented this sacred land in oder to listen to the thero preach.π€΄π»✨
Another rock inscription found from the premises belonging to 9th century AD shows the Mahayana influence in the latter part of the Anuradhapura period. πΈπ«
The silence that surrounded the environs was remarkable. ππ»♂️There were steps carved on the rock surface that made our climb easier. π§♂️At a landing midway of the steps we found a large open cave. πͺ¨π»The drip ledges carved at the edge of the roof of the cave looked smooth and unique. π₯Ίπ«The inscription carved over those drip ledges in Brahmit letters states that this complex of natural caves was offered to the Maha Sangha by King Devanampiyatissa for their use and since then it was named "Raja Giri Lena".⛰️π
